Helpful Hints to keep you active and moving over XmasDecember 4, 2013
Always lift using your legs and not your back. Start by facing the object front-on, place your feet a comfortable distance apart. Bend your knees and allow the buttocks to approach the floor and lift using your legs.
If you have a low back injury you should avoid prolonged sitting, particularly in a soft chair. If necessary, sit no longer than 45 minutes at a time, in a firm chair with a lumbar support and take a break every 20 minutes.
Ice is more beneficial for most inflammatory conditions than heat. Heat often aggravates the problem in the long term, prolonging recovery. Place an ice pack on the affected area for up to 10 minutes. If necessary repeat after a 20 minute break.
In the early stages of treatment it is best to avoid activity that is more strenuous than normal. Ask us for advice on the suitability of exercise, sport and gym activities for your individual circumstances. Walking 30 – 40 minutes a day is recommended for spinal injury recovery as well as an excellent form of continuing exercise.
