Keeping you one step aheadDecember 6, 2012
Everyone ones loves a little self validation now and then. For me, this came in the form of a recent Courier Mail article revealing new research from Griffith University which corroborates my very theory regarding the advantages of barefoot running, something you will have no doubt heard me harp on about in previous blog entries.
I am not normally one to gloat but I was chuffed to learn that our humble little blog continues to keep our readers one step ahead, providing the latest and most accurate advice on all things sports medicine.
Enough back-patting though, here’s a snippet from the article…
The six months study gave six participants an exercise program, providing them with a traditional running shoe for one foot and a “barefoot” shoe that fits the foot like a glove for the other. Prof Beck said the leg without the traditional shoe showed the best result.
On average, the barefoot leg gained 8 per cent more hip bone mass, size, and strength, 3 per cent more muscle, 20 per cent more balance and lost about 3 per cent more fat than on the one leg sporting the traditional shoe.
