For years pediatric physios have said that tummy time is important for children lagging developmentally. Now it’s recognized that older children, teenagers and adults require more tummy time because of extensive use of personal electronic devices. The constant flexion of the hips and neck is causing an epidemic of chronic back and neck problems, which is only believed to get worse.
At home children are seen to be sitting and playing on devices for hours on end, where often they won’t realize they’re in pain until they try and correct their posture. You don’t need to limit their use of devices; however, allowing tummy time can take pressure off your child’s back muscles and nerves that may be weakened as a result of these positions.
